When taking a stolen bicycle report always encourage the owner to record the serial numbers of any bicycles they might still have.
IMPOUNDING OFFICER PROCEDURES
Check the bicycle for serial numbers, owner applied numbers, etc. Bicycle serial numbers are usually on the front frame area or under the pedal casing. Short numbers (S38592) are usually model numbers. Longer numbers (9NS90275402) are more likely the serial number.
Have all bicycles with serial numbers checked for stolen in LEDS/NCIC. Release the bicycle in the field whenever an owner can be located.
National Bike Registry decals may also be found on the bicycle. The decals can be located under the seat. If a decal is located, obtain the number and call 1-800-621-0852. When the owner information is obtained, ask the owner to contact an evidence officer to schedule an appointment for the release. Put the information on the property-evidence report.
Complete a property tag and attach it to the bike.
Complete the property-evidence report. Put the bike in the Vehicle Bay. Note the location on the property-evidence report.
Place the yellow and green copy of the yellow and green copy of the property-evidence reporting the property-evidence basket in the Evidence Processing Room.
For procedures on found bicycles (not stolen) see Found Property.
