JEWELRY
Always take care when packaging jewelry. This department is responsible for the return of items, including jewelry, in the same condition as when seized.
IMPOUNDING OFFICER PROCEDURES
All jewelry must be packaged in plastic so it is visible.
ONLY ONE ITEM of jewelry can be placed in each package. The only exception to this would be sets ie, earrings may be packaged together (find out why).
Package the item in such a way as to reduce the risk of damage.
Complete the evidence tag and attach it to the packaging.
Seal the packaging with heat sealer. Date and initial over the seal.
Complete the property-evidence report.
Itemize the jewelry. Do not generalize except on obvious costume jewelry. Take care when describing the jewelry. For instance, describe pearls as ‘pearl-colored beads’, an unstamped gold chain as ‘gold-colored chain’ and a ring with a suspect diamond as a ‘gold-colored ring with a clear stone.
Place the properly packaged evidence into an evidence locker. Note the location on the property-evidence report.
Place the yellow and green copy of the property-evidence report in the property-evidence basket in the Evidence Processing Room.
EVIDENCE OFFICER PROCEDURES
STORAGE
Ensure proper packaging; refer to the example board in the evidence processing area.
Place one barcode on the item and the corresponding barcode on the property receipt.
Store all jewelry of value in the safe.
Using the barcode reader, scan the location of the shelf within the safe and then scan the barcode that is affixed to the item.
Place the item in numerical order by case number.
DISPOSAL
Upon authorization or disposition of the case, see “General Disposition of Items."
