HOW TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT LOCATION
Use the following guidelines:

Refrigerator – Place items requiring refrigeration in one of the individual lockers within large locker #1 in the refrigerator at headquarters.
Refrigerator – Place items requiring refrigeration in one of the individual lockers in the refrigerator at East Precinct.
The Vehicle Bay – Place items and vehicles to be searched and printed that are too large or heavy for the evidence lockers in the vehicle bay.
The Impound Lot – Place automobiles that are being stored as evidence in the impound lot. Vehicles that only need to be processed must be left in the vehicle bay or in the tow lot.
Special exceptions to the submission of seized property:
Place all hypodermic needles and razor blades in the infectious waste containers that are designed for that purpose. They are located at various sites such as the evidence process areas at headquarters and East Precinct, the trunks of patrol cars, and the jail booking and reception area. It is the deputy’s responsibility to ensure that sharps containers are restocked each time one is used and removed from service.
Hazardous materials will not be handled, transported or stored. Contact the on-duty supervisor upon encountering any hazardous material.
Explosive devices will not be handled, transported or stored. Call the Portland Police Bureau Explosives Unit for evaluation and pickup (503-823-2089 or emergency 503-823-1901). Verify numbers
A prisoner’s personal property will be left with the corrections facility, unless such items are evidence of a crime or are prohibited or are too large to store in the jail.
See "Marijuana" for storing plants.
See "Biological Evidence" for drying bloody items.
An exception is allowed for members of the Investigations Division. When further examination of evidence is needed for investigative purposes, members who are individually assigned a case for follow-up may store evidence of the case up to 24 hours in a secure location other than the Property-Evidence Unit. Such exceptions must be approved in advance by the member’s Sergeant.

This exception to the general policy does not extend to alternate storage of items of evidence such as controlled substances, money, fine jewelry, or weapons. These items must always be secured in the officially sanctioned property-evidence storage facility listed in this manual and submitted prior to the end of the member’s shift. |
