Law enforcement related
News in brief from across the U.S.

Massachusetts
Kay-bee toy Stores in Agawam destroyed 121 tons of realistic-looking toy guns last November. The toy chain pulled the imitation guns from shelves after two children carrying realistic toy guns were shot by NY City police.

New Hampshire
Enfield minister Herbert Kershaw fatally shot himself while demonstrating gun safety to his family at the kitchen table. The New Life Christian Fellowship Church minister began stockpiling guns because he feared the Brady Law would infringe upon his rights. His daughter said Kershaw didn't know the .45 caliber pistol was loaded.

New York
Edward Pilus, a former New York State Police investigator, was sentenced to a maximum of eight years in prison for faking evidence in a 1991 Rockland County carjacking.

Richard Magpiong, 56, was arrested when he suffered a badly timed attack of gas while hiding during a burglary. Homeowner Grissom and a friend held the flatulent burglar until police arrived.

Florida
John Abbananto, 34, a former Palm beach County Sheriffs Deputy, plead guilty to stealing a gold and diamond Rolex watch from the victim of a fatal traffic accident. He sold the watch for $1,800, enough money to put a down payment on a house. The deputy was fired after an internal affairs investigation. The crime was brought to departmental attention by the deputy's wife. Abbananto will serve probation, time under house arrest and give up his police certificate.

Georgia
Twelve youths at Charlton County High School were injured when a 60 mm bazooka shell exploded after it was dropped. The students were passing the shell around when itwas dropped the first time, then continued to pass it around. It exploded the second time it hit the floor. The students, three critically injured, all suffered "devastating, military type injuries" according to the emergency room physician. The explosion was felt a quarter of a mile away.

Illinois
Donal Savage, a part-time U.S. customs clerk was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing 20 guns from an evidence locker and selling them to gang members.

Arizona
State investigators concluded that the Huachuca Police Department made $45,000 from the undercover sale of marijuana "samples". The investigation revealed the loss of 15 pounds of marijuana. No state charges will befiled against the agency.

Hawaii
Nearly 46,000 marijuana plants have been destroyed on the island of Kauai by a task force of police, DEA agents, and the U.S. Army. The four operations resulting in the massive seizures were declared a success.

LONDON
Nine British police officers on a narcotics raid failed to reach their target after they squeezed into an elevator made for eight. The elevator ground to a halt. The police were trapped for about 45 minuets in the apartment building elevator before their cries for help were heard, the Sun newspaper reported.

"I told them I would get the police and they shouted: 'We are the bloody police---get the fire brigade,'" said Eddie Laidle, a resident of the building where the police were trapped.

Camden, NJ
The family was both elated and saddened. When their two-year-old son fell from a third story balcony, little Matthew Mikels was clutching the family pet. Matthew landed squarely on top of the cat, breaking his fall. Matthew survived with minor injuries. The tabby cat staggered a short distance, fell over and died.

"It's amazing he's alive." said Police Detective Gary Miller. "If it wasn't for the cat, Matthew would have had some internal injuries, but the cat cushioned his fall." If the cat had not been such an unwilling participant perhaps a medal would have been in order.
