News in Brief

Elko, Nevada
Few fires get the response and immediate attention as the fire reported at Izez's D&D Bar and Brothel. The first call reported a two-alarm blaze, but when the dispatcher reported that "prostitutes were calling for help, " all three City of Elko fire engines and crews showed up to help. Of course they were joined by two more units from Spring Creek Volunteers, and more units from Carlin, and the there was the assortment of units responding from the Nevada Division of Forestry including crews and rigs from where-ever.

A spokesperson later commented, "Seems like the only fire company not put on full alert was in Salt Lake City."

California
A state appeals court has revived a wrongful death suit brought by the widow of a suicidal man who bought a revolver from a gun shop, then used the gun to kill himself. According to court records Michele Bramans's husband went to the gun shop and paid for a revolver one week after ending treatment for mental illness. Fifteen days later, he picked up the gun and shot himself in the head. The appeals court said amendments to the state Dangerous Weapons Control law required state officials to screen gun shop customers and block purchases by those who might harm themselves. The state had maintained that the law created no mandatory duty to investigate potential gun buyers, and was not intended to prevent suicides.

Sydney, Australia
People are filling tennis balls with illegal drugs and using rackets to hit them into Australian Jails. Hitting, throwing, or using a crossbow to fire drug-filled tennis balls over the razor wire of prison walls are among the imaginative smuggling techniques identified by an inquiry into drug-taking in South Australian Jails. The traditional drugs hidden in cakes carried into prison visits is still popular. The South Australian government plans to step up security around the states eight jails, and may use drug-sniffing dogs to patrol outside jai Is for people with suspicious tennis balls.

Brooklyn, New York
The former principal of PS 100, Stuart Posner, was accused in February of stealing from the school candy store, establishing businesses on school property, and charging students to watch television during class time.

Mississippi
Professor Lewis Nobles, Jr., served 25 years as president of the Southern Baptist-affiliated Mississippi College. He was respected by peers and the community alike. However, that was before his arrest by the FBI. The investigation showed Nobles began siphoning off donations in the late 70's to fund his "secret life". It appears Professor Nobles was better liked before people learned he had embezzled $3 million in donations to spend on parties, prostitutes and gifts.

La Puente, California
A man who allegedly had set three trees on fire was killed when a sheriff s cruiser left unattended rolled on top of him. A deputy pursued the man after he threw a beer can at a fellow officer. The deputy drove past the fleeing suspect, got out of his car and became involved in a struggle while attempting an arrest. The car then rolled into the struggling pair.

"It struck the deputy, pushed him away and rolled over the suspect, coming to a stop on top of him" said Deputy Gabe Ramirez.

"All I know is there's nobody in the car and somehow it began to travel without any occupants and it struck the deputy and suspect," said Deputy Brian Jones.

The deputy suffered cuts and bruises when the car pushed him aside.

Bangkok, Thailand
Last year a veteran traffic cop was placed in a therapy program when he switched all the traffic lights to green at a major intersection, then danced crazily around the street until subdued by other arriving officers. Traffic is a hard detail that can cause even the toughest cop to crack. Not so said the officer, now recovered and back on duty. He explained the incident this way. "Through my sixth sense, I saw a procession (coming down the street) of the King Chulalongkom. So I pressed all the traffic lights to give the procession a free passage. Then I danced to greet the processional." Great story, especially since King Chulalongkorn died in 1910.

Stockton
A man walked up to a target shooter at a firing range, shot him to death without saying a word, then killed himself with a shot to the head. The two men were shooting at the range when one walked over to the victim and opened fire from a yard away with a 9mm pistol. The gunman shot the 34year-old victim a second time as he fell, walked way, returned to shoot the victim again, walked away while firing randomly, then shot himself.

Los Angeles, California
Resignations are depleting the ranks of LAPD including young officers who cite low pay, lack of leadership and a perception of unfair promotion policies as the reasons for quitting. The number of resignations have quadrupled in the past four years.

The Police Commission after reviewing a recent report cited poor public perception of the agency as a main factor in the resignations. While the department has made major efforts to expand, resignations are depleting personnel strength faster than the officers can be replaced. Plans to significantly expand the size of the Police Department may be in jeopardy due to lack of available personnel and recruits.
