Rutland, Vermont
Two Marble Valley prison escapees were caught in New York City. Police
also found their to-do list, which reads, "Drive to Maine, get safer place
to stay, buy guns, get Marie, get car, Dartmouth, do robbery, go to New
York."
Austin, Texas
The state is adding 113 parole officers, bringing the total number
of officers to 1,178 in 67 district parole offices. They will supervise
75,000 parolees, the Department of Justice said. (Case load of 64 parolees
per officer.)
Brigham City, Utah
A Judge sentenced supervisor Joseph Smoot, 48, to up to 15 years in
for misusing $24,000 in public money. He will serve 30 days, but make restitution
and pay a $1 ,850fine.
Modesto, California
The Air Quality Control Board plans to take the Ku Klux Klan to court
for cross burning. When local law enforcement was unable to stop Klan demonstrations,
they contacted the Air Quality Control Board for help. The AQC Board contends
that the Klans cross-burnings violate local air pollution regulations.
Paris, France
Le Figaro, a retired factory owner was served with a back taxes bill
for $745,000. He argued, the tax collector insisted, he refused, the tax
collector threatened. Finally he paid the entire amount of the bill, with
22 tons of coins. It was perfectly legal. The law only says the bill must
be paid in legal tender. The legal tender Le Figaro selected was about
four million one-franc coins.
Omaha, Nebraska
The Nebraska Police were surprised when a officer received a page from
a drug dealer setting up a sale. The dealer would set up buys with this
crack cocaine customers· by paging them, arranging an impromptu
meeting at constantly changing locations, then quickly move on.
How'd he get caught? He misdialed the intended beeper number by one
digit according to Sg1. Marc Langan. He then set-up the deal, not realizing
he was speaking with a police officer.
Reno, Nevada
A citizen surprised three men who were burglarizing his car. A fight
ensued and the victim got the worst end of the deal. Finally, the furor
and attention it brought forced the trio to flee. 22 year old suspect Felimone
Ruiz-Perz was running at full speed to make his get away when he failed
to notice the brick wall ahead of him. Ruiz-Perz ran right into the brick
wall knocking himself unconscious until well after police and ambulance
crews arrived. He had a good laugh, was loaded into the ambulance for Washoe
Medical Center and then transferred to jail.
London, England
The constables of London Metro's Ealing Division have been warned not
to cut the hair too short. Police Superintendent Bill Troke - Thomas warned
the bobbies that those who "refuse to let their hair grow may face desk
duty." The feeling is that short haircuts make officers look too aggressive.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Police were called at 8am on a recent Saturday morning after an office
worker arrived at work and found the office had been broken into and the
safe was standing open. The office worker quietly pointed to the man, fast
asleep and snoring loudly on the floor in front of the safe, as the probable
burglar. It seems the thief was a poor quality locksmith. When skeleton
keys wouldn't get him in, he resorted to brut force. Police believe he
had worked so hard at the break-in that the little guy just fell asleep
on the job.
Minoa, New York
Three 13-year-old boys charged with conspiring to set off a homemade
fertilizer bomb in Minoa, N.Y. were ordered to stay home from school for
the next year. The eight-grad students were arrested Feb. 1 for allegedly
planning to blow up the main office of Pine Grove Junior High School. Police
said the boys got information to make the bomb off the internet. The boys
will be schooled at home for 12 months. They still face felony conspiracy
charges.
