The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Gordon A. Bowers

Last issue focused on the Bad and Ugly, so we want to counter this issue with some Good.  These photos are from the property room in the new $30 million Burbank (CA) Police and Fire Headquarters, which was dedicated just two months ago.  Your Association Executive Director, Joe Latta, is a Lieutenant there and has had the Property Room as one of his responsibilities for almost 20 years.  The new Property Room is almost entirely his design.

Narcotics VaultIn the narcotics vault, shelving was designed for custom made plastic bins (shown), which exactly fit the Narcotics Envelopes used for drug storage.

Mobile filing cabinets have shelving designed to fit [uniform size storage] boxes.  The [uniform size storage] box is one of the standardized containers used for storing evidence from one case together.

Inside the Property Room, a walk-in freezer is at far left.  The two open doors are to temporary storage rooms, and can be opened only from inside Property Room.  The outside doors are left ajar, and then secured by employees placing evidence there, just as the small property lockers are.  The rooms can be used for temporary storage of large seized items, such as tires, surfboards, cases of cigarettes, etc.

Tall narrow shelves are for videotape storage.  Note large, waist height work surfaces on left for packaging, examining or, re-packaging property.
