Property Room Bicycle Storage

One of the goals of every Property and Evidence Room manager is to find ways of moving bicycles out of your system as quickly as possible. The amount of available storage space that is used for bicycles is often very significant; in fact, during a recent visit to a large police department, fully 25% of their available space was consumed by bikes. On a recent visit to the Calgary Police Service in Alberta, Canada, LA.P.E. Executive Director Joe Latta and Board President Bill Kiley observed a storage method that they had never seen before.

Using a commercially developed product called "Bike Up" bicyclesClick Image to View Larger were stored vertically, thereby reducing the amount of floor space required to store the bikes. While many agencies store bicycles vertically, most often the bikes are lifted up and hung by some sort of hood. With the Bike Up system the rear tire remains on the ground, so there is no need to lift the full weight of the bicycle. To the right is a photo of the system as used by the Calgary Police Service Evidence and Property Room. If you are interested in learning more about the Bike Up, vertical storage product you can get information at their Web site: www.bikeup.com
